30 years ago, I was a 19-year-old assistant instructor, working with children in a martial arts program. We spent our days training kids from all walks of life to become confident, strong, disciplined and proud of their varied accomplishments. One student in particular, however, had a profound impact on me. A mother brought her son in for his first lesson. He had a swollen eye and a visibly bruised ego. Being bullied at school had left Jason with low self-esteem and he was feeling pretty sorry for himself when he came in. His mom had realized that a drastic change needed to happen in Jason’s life and felt that self-defense training would help him to step into his power.
Within minutes of working with him, I noticed that he was struggling with the same things that many of the kids his age were facing – a lack of confidence and the inability to stand up tall and take ownership of his unique traits and abilities. As we worked through the lesson, I witnessed a transformation before my eyes. He began to open up, was more comfortable smiling and started to realize that he could empower himself to be more than what he was feeling at the time.
In that moment, I realized the full extent of the role that Mastery Martial Arts could play in the lives of every child in our community.
That was It.
I realized that we would create a Martial Arts program that supported parents and families that would be designed to help them raise Strong, Confident leaders for life. How we could use Mastery as a vehicle to give kids the mentorship, support and guidance and become a Black Belt Leader for life.
The truth is that it’s not easy being a parent. Every child has their own unique needs and struggles and there is, unfortunately, no one-size-fits-all parenting blueprint. One thing we know for sure is that, as a parent, you want the best for your child. You want them to be capable, self-assured and assertive, leading fulfilled, happy and independent lives. But with growing pressures like navigating social media, increased homework load and trying to fit in with friends as well as common stressors like peer pressure, a fast-changing body and negative thought patterns, your child needs a way to develop healthy coping mechanisms to deal with life’s demands and challenges.
With so many different programs and courses currently available, deciding what’s best for your child can be overwhelming. Much of the content on offer is costly, ineffective in the long-run and unsustainable for a child to maintain.
The Mastery Leadership Program is designed to help you prepare your child for success in a challenging world. Focusing on achieving holistic wellbeing, Mastery cultivates mental toughness, emotional maturity, boundless compassion and advanced leadership skills to ensure that your child learns how to refuse to be a victim and grabs hold of their future with confidence and passion. Formulated to create highly-effective young leaders, the Leadership Program has its foundation in the powerful benefits of martial arts and now incorporates intelligence, called Dojo Genius, into the training methodology. In this way, we can effectively teach children to recognize patterns that exist in the world and show them how to create new and improved ones in imaginative, mathematical ways.
We also enhanced the training by addressing fundamental issues that are concerns for all parents such as what would inspire a child, what level of challenge would be appropriate, how to reward and celebrate milestones constructively and how to involve parents in transformations. Adding 6 essential life skills to our curriculum and formulating the Leadership Triangle Methodology, we’ve mastered the secret to molding a shy, insecure child into someone who could confidently lead a class of 40, within a few months.
