Helping Your Child Become Mentally Tough

As a parent, it’s your job to help your child become mentally tough. But what does that mean, exactly? And how can you go about doing it? Here are four tips to help you get started.

1. Encourage Them to Set Goals

One of the best ways to help your child become mentally tough is to encourage them to set goals—and then help them stick to those goals. What kind of goals should they be setting? That will depend on their age, interests, and abilities. But some examples might include reading a certain number of books in a month, finishing all their homework for the week without being reminded, or running a certain distance in a race.

2.Teach Them How to Handle Failure

No one likes to fail, but it’s an inevitable part of life. The sooner your child learns how to handle failure in a positive way, the better. One way to do this is to encourage them to view failure as a learning opportunity. Help them see that failure isn’t the end of the world—it’s simply a chance to start again and do better next time.

3. Help Them Develop a Thick Skin

In today’s world, it’s important for children to develop a thick skin—and that starts with you, as their parent. When they make a mistake, instead of getting angry or upset, try to stay calm and constructive. Help them see that everyone makes mistakes and that what’s important is how they learn from those mistakes. Additionally, avoid comparing them to other children or putting them down in any way. Doing so will only make them feel worse about themselves and could damage their self-esteem. Also check out our blog on how to parent your child to be emotionally intelligent.

4. Encourage Them to Be resilient

Another important quality for mentally tough children is resilience—the ability to keep going even when things are tough. One way you can encourage resilience is by teaching your child how to problem-solve. When they encounter a problem, help them brainstorm possible solutions instead of simply telling them what to do. This will not only help them develop critical thinking skills, but it will also show them that there’s more than one way to achieve their goals.
