Math, Music and Martial Arts … All Connected Into One?

There has been a relationship between math and music for hundreds of years. People spend their lives analyzing the patterns of music and numbers. Some people even go farther and find those same patterns in nature. It is amazing to see the connection – the patterns – between these seemingly different things.

Add martial arts to this list. Math, Music and Martial Arts have the same patterns and concepts to make them intertwine with one another. Just like music has a beat, tempo, rhythm, and pace, so does martial arts. Martial arts moves must be done with correct timing in rhythm to be effective. If music is played with the wrong beat it does not sound right. If martial arts is done with bad timing, you get hit by your opponent.

Not Convinced Yet? Let’s Dive Deeper Into Math and Martial Arts.

Math and Martial Arts are now being taught together to help students understand that patterns exist. By using the same language of a pattern, students learn faster. Once a student knows the numbers 1,2,3, they can apply that to create patterns in martial arts. Instead of trying to memorize the High Block, Punch, Front Kick, the student connects the numbers:

1 = High Block

2 = Punch

3 = Front Kick

Now, the student can learn 6 patterns in a matter of minutes whereas in the past it may take weeks!

In the past, the student would learn the 3 step combo: High Block, Punch, Front Kick. Then they would be taught to perform the next combination which would be: High Block, Front Kick, Punch. The student would struggle to learn this new combination and have to start learning it all over again.

By connecting Math to Martial Arts, the student skips over the frustrations of memorization and learns faster! They understand the pattern 1,2,3 and that the next pattern is 1,3,2 so they make the connection in their brain and then tell their body what to do.

Okay…Following, So What About Music and Martial Arts?

This process repeats when you switch to music. A basic pattern in music is 1,2,3. You can now see 1,2,3 as Do,Re,Mi. Play the notes in the pattern and then change the pattern to play something else.

With practice, you child starts to play music using notes and chords with grace and confidence.

Let’s Put It All Together!

In no time at all, your child’s knowledge begins to look something like this:

1,2,3 = High Block, Punch, Front Kick = Do,Re,Mi

1,3,2 = High Block, Front Kick, Punch = Do,Mi,Re

Now your child understands Math, Music, and Martial Arts!

Understanding this type of learning is what makes Mastery Martial Arts a major part of children’s education. All martial arts schools teach kids how to block, punch, and kick… BUT, only Mastery Martial Arts can say that we make children smarter!

The program is called Dojo Genius and is taking the United States by storm!

Here is a great video that shows some examples of this and even brings Nature in the mix.
