What Our Students Say

Self Esteem

My son is going two days a week at Mastery Martial Arts for a little over a month now. Me and my husband also his school Teacher can’t believe the change in him since joining. My son looks forward to going every week. He is working harder in school and at home. His manners and self-esteem have improved. They are more than just teaching Karate, they teach children about self-respect and to have respect for others, they learn valuable life lessons and truly care about their students and their parents.

We absolutely love it here at Mastery! Our daughter needed help with her self-esteem. These classes have improved significantly. She is super happy and growing strong with every class. The instructors here are incredible. When we went to a birthday party at Mastery Aurora was super nervous. The instructors there made it their priority to make her feel comfortable and welcome. It only took 10 minutes for them to get her to join in on the fun. She did so well she got to break her first board at the party! While I was tearing up with excitement for her she was glowing! It was a no-brainer that this class was for her. We are so excited to continue watching Aurora grow with Mastery! -

If you have a child with low self-esteem and looking to build confidence as well in your child. Mastery Martial Arts is the place to go. Not only they will build your child’s confidence and self-esteem, but they will also teach selfdiscipline, self-defense, physical fitness, flexibility, promote friendship, public speaking, teamwork, how to become a leader, and most of all, simply a lot of fun. All the instructors are highly skilled and are open and engaging. I have never seen instructors have anything but other than the best interests of the individual student as their primary concern in this school. Again it’s amazing and I encourage you not to only read these reviews, but take the big step and bring your child one day to Mastery Martial Arts in Johnston to see it for yourself. I did it with my son in October 2018 and it was one of the best discussions I made. My son in just weeks developed confidence and his self-esteem tremendously improved he started to believe in himself and that he can accomplish any challenge he faces. He came home every day feeling proud of himself and always left with a big smile on his face. I am positive you and your child will leave feeling the same way to. Again I would encourage anyone, regardless of age or physical ability to give it a try — and I can think of no better group of people for my son to pursue this art with than the members of Mastery Martial Arts in Johnston.

My partner and I are child psychologists and enrolled our oldest child in Mastery Martial Arts in September. We had been looking for the right martial arts program not only to grow physical skills but to give our child a chance to practice self-regulation, confidence, and courage to step outside of their comfort zone. We could not be happier with the experience at Mastery so far. The structure and content of the Mastery classes are truly developmentally informed and use principles of behaviorism to grow skills and build motivation: Each half-hour class is game-based, holding kids' attention while expanding their physical and psychological skill set. In each class, kids have a chance to earn yellow stripes (based on caregivers' reports of how they're progressing with goals at home, such as first-time listening or honesty) and black stripes (based on skills practice in class). Across each multi-week unit, kids practice a distinct set of martial arts moves and social-emotional skills (such as discipline, balance, listening, and self-esteem) before assessing and celebrating what they've learned in a belt test and graduation ceremony. In this way, kids have a chance to celebrate small accomplishments between their belt tests and bigger ones at each graduation ceremony. This builds both motivation and accountability. Throughout, kids practice executive function skills such as inhibitory control (stopping an automatic response and doing something else instead!), focusing and sustaining attention, and listening to and comprehending instructions. These skills are necessary to all kinds of social, academic, and physical tasks, and each week I hear caregivers reporting on how they see them showing up in their kids' behavior at home and at school. In closing, one piece of unsolicited advice for caregivers: Give your child time as they get started. As with any behavior change, it may take weeks or even a couple of months to see improvement; but I encourage you to trust in these instructors--and in your child. As ours got started, my partner and I had to hold ourselves back from jumping in to try to get our child to participate. We even briefly considered pulling them out. Instead, we did our best to trust in these instructors' expertise and in our child's courage, and I'm so glad we did. I doubt we're the only parents who have witnessed our child's bravery, self-esteem, and self-regulation blossom since starting martial arts with Mr. Pezzillo and Mr. Martinez. As a parent, this has been such a joy. And perhaps the best part? My kid is excited to put on that uniform and head to class every time.-

My grandson has been a part of the Mastery Family for a little over a year and the transformation has truly been a blessing! His confidence, self-esteem how he believes in himself and especially how he's turned into a leader has been a dream come true! don't get me wrong we do have small setbacks but he gets back on track a lot sooner as he has his life skills to remind him to get back on track! Thank you Mastery Staff for all you do. Making a difference one student at a time!

Confidence

Since my son joined the Mastery family over 3 months ago I have noticed increased confidence in him, he is not only learning the physical side of martial arts but more importantly the mental toughness and life lessons he will be using long after his martial arts career is complete. Mr. Pezzillo and his staff are profession, patient and caring. They are fantastic with all the students, constantly providing feedback and taking extra time to make sure each student understands and gets the support they need to succeed. My family, especially my son, could not be more happy with our choice to join the Mastery family.

We are so grateful to have found Mastery Material Arts! The difference we have seen in my 5-year-old since starting Mastery almost a year ago is beyond anything I could have imagined. I as well as other family members and school staff have seen a tremendous positive change in her behavior, level of respect and confidence as well as his communication skills. I highly recommend Mastery Martial Arts and its amazing staff!

I am beyond impressed at how well Mastery engages the kids and encourages a positive yes I can attitude! My kids have been going for a year now, they absolutely love it! They’re learning martial arts moves, but also how to have confidence in front of peers. Mastery reinforces all that we are teaching our kiddos at home about how to grow up and just be good respectful people

My son began his martial arts journey with Mastery in Johnston just over a year ago. He was shy and needed to learn how to be self-confident. While he is still learning, he is a different child today, he is more outgoing and his self-esteem is growing. He doesn’t fight us about going to Mastery, he looks forward to each session and is upset when he is unable to attend. He sets goals for himself and works hard to achieve his belt advancements. We love Mastery and especially the instructors at this location, they are all such positive role models in his life. Thank you, all!

The amount of confidence and strength our children have built since starting Mastery is beyond amazing. Our 9- year-old went from struggling with believing in herself, to now raising her hand and telling Ms. Tellier how confident and amazing she is. We also just had a birthday party for our son, and when he broke the little wooden board, he broke down in tears of joy and told us he was so proud of himself. It was an amazing moment to experience. Mastery has become part of our family, and I will 100% recommend it. Thank you Mastery!!

My son struggled with extreme shyness, social anxiety, and low confidence. We thought Martial Arts would be a good place for him to work through some of these things and learn discipline and focus. Each instructor at Mastery goes above and beyond and even beyond more to make sure each student succeeds. At first, he would not even participate, but only because of the encouragement and professionalism, and maturity of the staff and instructors did he not only start to participate but thrive. It has helped him in nearly every area of his life including school, family relationships, and overall sense of well-being. I promise you, there is no better place for your child to learn Martial Arts than Mastery.

AMAZING studio. My Daughter Tenaya has been there for 4 years now. Her time at Mastery Martial Arts has made her attitude more relaxed and her ability to follow rules is a lot better as well. Mr. Pezzillo the instructor took time just for her to help her get started and i could not ask for anything more. Can’t wait to see how far she goes in the program

Leadership

I am privileged to participate in an 18-month elite leadership development program at the Fortune 5 company where I work. During the most recent session, our program coordinator hired a costly consulting group to teach us leadership skills leveraging a highly curated business simulation. Throughout the 2 day session, some familiar themes began to emerge... The best leaders have Structure, Emotion. Knowledge, Legacy, and never give up. They build trust, and consistency, dream big, have a vision, are determined, courageous, and humble. Let me assure you that you don't need to work for a $200 billion company to learn .more about these leadership traits, because Mr. West teaches all of them (and more) to his students at Mastery. I felt so lucky to have been invited to join my company's esteemed leadership development program, but am forever grateful for the opportunity to allow my kids to learn these life skills at such a young age. Oh, and they learn cool karate moves, too. Thank you, Mastery, for investing in the leaders of the next generation!

Our daughter loves Mastery! The leadership skills are so important for young children it teaches them to speak up and stand up for their values and not just go with the flow. Martial arts teaches teamwork and positive peer support; along with the importance of physical activity. It brings families together, encouraging parental support along the way. My daughter is dedicated to her academics and her training and mastery help encourage academic importance. The staff at Johnston Mastery are truly encouraging their students to be well-rounded individuals.

2.5 years ago Johnathan would have never gotten up in front of anyone willingly - without having crippling anxiety and a complete meltdown. Words cannot even begin to express what Mastery and Leadership has done for his anxiety and for his overall confidence. He amazes us every day with how far he has come, and we couldn’t be prouder of him. Thank you Mastery for giving our son the tools, encouragement, and guidance that he needs to grow and succeed in this crazy world that he is a part of. You have been one of THE BEST decisions that we have made for our boys!

Our boys have been with Mastery for 6 years. We have watched their confidence grow and their bodies and minds get stronger. Thanks to their leadership program, our boys are comfortable with public speaking and understand the importance of doing their best. All the instructors are passionate about what they do. They gently push the kids and encourage them to improve their techniques to earn their next belt. Mr. West is a great leader and we hope the boys continue to grow into disciplined young adults.

My husband and I strong see that our daughter is born to lead a teach and Mastery gives her the stepping stones to help guide her in the right direction. If you live in the Smithfield area you have to meet Mr West and his team, you won’t be disappointed. -

We signed up our daughter in the spring of 2022. At the time she lacked self-confidence, didn't really want to be around crowds of people, and kept to herself in school. After meeting with her teachers this week, they say she offers to help other students where she understands the subject material better than others, she is often in the middle of crowds with friends, and is a "joy to be around". The life lessons, as well as learning the physical benefits of Karate she will have with her the rest of her life. I appreciate the time and energy mastery spends on all of their students, and that they work to keep their minds active as well as their bodies. I couldn't thank Mr. West and his team enough for helping to mold Miss Elizabeth into the person we all love and support.

Bullying

Mastery has helped my daughter find confidence in herself like never before. She has learned to find the courage to stand up to bullies at school and be unbothered by the things they say. She is constantly setting small goals (to earn her stripes) in order to achieve bigger ones like earning her next belt. The instructors here at Mastery have become idols and role models in Lilly’s life. They are all about trying your absolute best no matter what, and always giving it your all. When I sit and watch class on the sidelines, I actually wish I could participate too! These instructors are not only teaching Martial Arts but also life skills and lessons to use in everyday life. Mr. West is fun, motivating, and resourceful for kids and parents. The staff in this location are absolutely amazing and helpful every step of the way. I highly recommend Mastery to anyone wanting to get their kids involved in a hobby/sport looking for dedication, discipline, fitness, and overall fun!

My son has been with Mastery for 3 years now. He was being bullied from 4-6 grade and became easily angered, and frustrated, didn’t want to be around us, had low self-esteem, isolated himself, didn’t want friends, had no confidence, no smiles, and didn’t want his pictures taken and I could go on and on. Mastery, Ron Russo, and his awesome team have helped him and he’s back to being himself again. It has been a wonderful journey watching his transformation right before our eyes. He started as a white belt and is now an apprentice black/purple stripe belt. His smile is back again and he enjoys being his silly self again. Thank you Mastery, Ron Russo, and team. Proud Mastery parent here! 😊❤

My 9-year-old granddaughter has been with Mastery Martial Arts since last year. I have been involved both as a coach & parent for my 2 adult kids in several sports all throughout their school years. This is by far THE BEST program I’ve ever been involved with!!! Not only do they learn Martial Arts, they also learn the most important “real life” lessons that will stay with them!! Respect of self, others & community, confidence, impeccable manners, responsibility, short and long-term goal setting, strong focus on school achievements, chores, sportsmanship, accountability and SO much more!! The students & their families, along with the instructors & staff are truly a “family” that share and cheers on every student’s achievements!! Students “EARN” their way through the program (not everyone gets a “trophy”)!! By far, THE BEST investment in both excellent physical conditioning, the Martial Arts & in giving them the tools and lessons for a successful future, whatever path they may take in life!! I can’t say enough about how this program, the INCREDIBLE Teachers & awesome Staff/Counselors enrich your child & family!!

Walking into mastery I was looking for something that would spark his interest more than a video game... What I got was a lifestyle change. I am watching my son become more understanding of what’s important and become more confident. His reading has improved and his willingness to read is hardly a battle these days. Not only does he have an interest to do well at Mastery but an interest to do well at school and be a better person. I am so proud of him and would suggest Mastery to anyone looking to help their child grow.

My son Frankie absolutely LOVES the staff and atmosphere at Mastery! They are extremely focused on the priorities that lie ahead in a young child's life. They teach the positivity that karate is so much more than the physical aspect that everyone expects. I love the fact that the leadership program also teaches respect, focus, and discipline as well as self-defense. I would strongly recommend Mastery in Smithfield!!! Mr. West is an amazing gentleman with the PATIENCE of a saint!!!! Seriously...I don't know how he does it...class after class...smile after smile....EVERYONE at Mastery gets 5 stars here!!!! -

Mr. Pezziillo is a great teacher, my son has changed so much since coming here. My son has ADHD and the system wanted to medicate him. I came here for discipline, self-control, focus, respect, and his trigger points. I must say martial arts has helped him so much, he still has a bit more to go but i am proud of how far he has become and is because of martial arts. Thank you Miss Lemoi for always texting us and reaching out to make sure everything is going well

ADHD

Mastery has given my son the ability to set and achieve goals on a short-term and long-term basis. He has learned to manage several tasks while also maintaining the honor roll in school. He has learned to control his ADHD without medication from life skills taught at mastery. He is able to be proud is all he does and work harder when he does not achieve all goals set. Thanks to mastery he does this with a smile knowing he tried his best at all times

My son has been with Mastery Johnston for 18 months. Many were convinced that he will never make it, including family members. My son has ADD/ADHD. He is struggling with filtering information, especially in loud and busy environments, distractions, body coordination etc. He has extremely low self-esteem and totally believed that he is worthless.

My son was diagnosed with ADHD at the age of 4 and it has always been hard to find group sports or activities where he won’t get lost in the crowd. He also has some language delays and can miss instructions very easily. I was apprehensive about martial arts in fear that it was too structured and he would not be able to follow along or wouldn’t fit in. In a few short weeks at Mastery Martial Arts in East Greenwich my son has excelled beyond all expectations. The instructors are so incredibly attentive and inclusive with all of the children and adjust class to support all learning and physical abilities. All families are welcomed and Included with an immediate sense of belonging. I am shocked at the changes and improvements we are seeing at home with an improvement in attitude and confidence towards everything. My son has grown and matured so much in a few weeks. He wants to practice and get stronger and applies lessons learned in class at home and in school. It’s exciting to see how much more is possible as he grows with Mr. Pezzillo and his team of instructors at Mastery. The lessons in leadership and confidence are things that are hard to teach but they do it so effortlessly. These lessons will serve my son throughout his life. This was by far the best decision and best investment in my son and I only wish I had signed up sooner

If you tell me at the beginning that Mastery martial art will transform your child, I would tell you that you are delusional. A martial art school has to be just about punching, kicking, and competitions. That was what I am hearing from some parents. Mastery is not just about martial art, it's about teaching how to own a strong mindset. Emphasizing the importance of role models which often mean us, the parents. Giving us the opportunity to connect with our children. Teaching kids to be respectful, take responsibility, be kind, empathetic and most importantly believe in themselves. My son has matured so much in this 18 months. Worth every penny

My 6-year-old son has been going to Mastery EG for 3 months now, and we absolutely love it! There's so much positive energy from the staff the minute you walk through the door, that no matter what kind of day we're having, we always leave feeling happy. The instructors are true professionals. I am always so amazed by their level of enthusiasm, which gets the kids excited and engaged. Mastery teaches young kids all about listening, self control and respect, and since my ADHD son started attending classes, his behavior at home and at school has really improved. Mastery is an outlet for him to exert all his energy in a safe, structured way while building up his selfesteem.

My son Maverick started this year in May after he turned 4. In a little over 6 months his confidence, attention, focus, listening, and communication skills have gone through the roof. The lessons we (and I do mean WE) have learned through Mastery we use daily at home. I've used phrases in public that are used in class several times and have other parents tell me they are "going to start using that" (Do we freak out or do we figure it out?).vI've had a handful of Mastery parents also tell me the change they've seen such an awesome improvement in my child's confidence and growth in a short period of time.

My now 11-year-old son has been with Mastery since February of 2020. His confidence, self-discipline, determination, and overall physical well-being has grown immensely! He opens doors for strangers, he is speaking up for himself, and he has become more comfortable in his own skin. Mastery is not just about Martial Arts but the ability to build confidence and strengthen your communication and speaking abilities. Also to note Mastery provided virtual classes throughout the pandemic and during restrictions. Having Mastery through the toughest year a 10-year-old can endure is beyond words that I can express. He had something to look forward to, socially enjoy, and learn the skill all on Zoom. I cannot thank Mastery North Attleboro enough! The enthusiasm and love of the program that the instructors have is incredible. I highly recommend you check out North Attleboro Mastery Martial Arts!!!

We started Mastery for my daughter to help with her discipline/listening and 3 years later still going strong. She was a shy little girl at the time and now uses all the life skills she has learned in martial arts outside of Mastery to become much more social and more importantly...a leader. The best part of all is that my daughter and I get to enjoy this together which is tough to come by these days as a parent and all thanks to Mastery! - Brian Bruke My hyperactive grandson is learning so much about listening, following instructions, and calming down for classes. My daughter has been a part of Mastery for about two years she has ranked all the way up and In April she will test for her apprentice black belt when we started Mastery two years ago I had no idea how much this program would impact my daughter and my family. When she started mastery she struggled with the appropriate way to express how she was feeling she lacked confidence and wouldn’t even think about publicly speaking. Now two years later she has more confidence than I could ever imagine and on top of it she has no problem getting up in front of her room and speaking at the young age of nine. Anthony Pezzillo the chief instructor at Mastery martial arts in Johnston has spent countless hours on and off the mat teaching my daughter discipline self-respect And basic responsibilities I don’t know where we would be today without mastery in our lives if you are thinking what can I enroll my child in Mastery martial arts is definitely the best option your child with Learn so much be on the world of karate. It’s those life lessons that will help them to be successful I couldn’t thank Anthony Pezzillo and the rest of the mastery team for the amount of time you have spent with our family and all you have done

Respect

Mastery Martial Arts in Smithfield has been a GAME CHANGER for my 4-year-old daughter and 5-year-old son. This place teaches much more than just martial arts. They assist parents in raising respectful, confident, mature children. Their goal is to create great humans first, who can become black belts. They give parents the tools to create a daily mindset of “yes I can attitudes” in all facets of their children’s lives, not just inside the classroom. We have seen our children develop in just a few short months. It is truly amazing! Mr West (head instructor) is wonderful with the children. Respect, self-esteem, discipline, and inclusivity are only a few of the tenants that are standard at Mastery. I have seen children as young as 7 years old stand in front of a group of peers and adults and fearlessly lead them through the school's creed. Hard work is recognized and families are encouraged to participate. The staff is friendly, helpful and very knowledgeable. Highly recommended for children!

Our son has been attending Mastery in Warwick for about 4 months and the change in him is already incredible! His confidence and respect is way up, he is able to focus much better, and he is showing more excitement every day.
